What you’ll learn: In this workshop graphic designer and letterer Jessica Matthews will provide insight into the ink lettering process she uses to create bespoke hand lettered pieces. A fun and creative workshop aimed at those who’ve experimented with hand lettering and want to push their skills further, Brush & Ink Lettering is designed to reinforce the fundamentals of hand lettering, while teaching you new skills to enable you to create beautiful pieces with the free-flowing ink lettering style. You will learn the basics of hand lettering starting with pencil and paper, as well as specific ink lettering techniques as you progress through a series of exercises. The key principles of lettering will be covered; such as proportion, rhythm, balance, creating ligatures, flourishes and decorative elements, alternate letterforms, and how to fit words and phrases together to create beautiful compositions. We’ll begin learning the structured script style of ink lettering before learning to break the rules with a more casual and freeform style. After you’ve mastered the basics of ink lettering you will get the chance to create your very own hand lettered piece featuring a chosen quote, phrase or lyric, with personal tutoring and guidance from Jessica. What is supplied:
Workshop participants will receive a kit with everything they’ll need including; paper, tracing paper, ruler, eraser, sharpener, pencils, and a small assortment of brushes. You’ll be able to take this kit home with you to continue practicing your awesome lettering work and post your creations all over instagram. What to bring: If you have a preferred pencil/pen/notebook, please feel free to bring it along. Also please bring along a few options of single word or short quotes, phrases or lyrics, as well as any reference material you feel will help your idea generation (e.g. music for the lyrics, album artwork, books you find inspiring, etc). Please be aware: As we'll be working with black ink participants are advised not to wear their best clothes, and to bring a smock or rag to use during the workshop.
