A talk by Dr Sanubar Baghirova, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, illustrated by musical extracts A joint event hosted by the SOAS Music Department and the Vostok Society, sponsored by The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) What we accept now as the 'classical traditions' of mugham was once a new trend. Since the late 19th century, we have seen how new art form, musical instruments, forms of social communication, and stylistic elements of the mugham vocabulary come into musical practice, being inially regarded as alternative, then gaining popularity and finally acquiring the status of classical tradition... until new art forms and new trends appear, revising this status. What are the latest trends in the modern art of mugham, and how do they appear? Who initiates them? What is the vision of mugham they display? We will discuss these questions with reference to recent collaborations, including that between mugham singer Gochag Askarov and French jazz singer Pierre de Tregoman.
