Monte Testaccio is the man-made hill located in the city's Testaccio district. While the site is normally closed to the public, I have arranged a special visit of the restricted archeological site. Visits include a hike up to the top of Monte Testaccio, as well as a tour of the hill and a history lesson of the surrounding zone. Composed of fragments of tens of millions of ancient terracotta amphorae, the hill is a fascinating trash heap which testifies to the Roman appetite for oil and other liquids during the Empire.
