Conference Topic Living in the dispensation, where the internet and social media is present in multiple aspects of life, its connection to conflict and peace cannot be overemphasized. It is no longer uncommon for political, social and other pressing discourses to be shared with the global family. Through various social media applications, powerful leaders, celebrities and local people can affect change either by initiating conflict or by addressing it To address the many dimensions of this issue, there will be a conference on the 1st of June 2017 themed Social Media and Conflict. The aim of the conference is to inspire research and development on social media towards peacebuilding online and offline. Additionally, we aim to increase internationalisation, as we discuss issues of international relevance and its impacts on individuals all around the world. This international aspect will be supported by a variety of experts, who will portray their different perspectives regarding the employment of social media. Program The conference will start at 09:00 in the morning and offer a variety of activities for all participants. The conference program will be as follows: Orientation & Registration During the first 30 minutes, attendees will have the chance to register themselves and network with others. Beverages and snacks will be offered, while the attendees can walk through an exhibition that visualizes the effects of social media movements in conflict situations. First lecture This lecture focuses on the Power of Social Media and will be held by Mr. Bremner. Second lecture This lecture will be about the relationship between Social Media and Terrorism. It will be given by Mark Singleton. Thrid lecture The final lecture will look into terrorism and cyber security. Lunch Lunch will be served for all attendees, including sandwiches, snacks and drinks. During this time, questions for the upcoming panel debate will be gathered from the attendees. Panel Discussion The panel will consist of the three or four guest speakers, who will discuss and address social media strategies and movements, as well as their impacts and effectiveness. Following the panel discussion, an Question & Answer session will be held, during which the attendees will have the opportunity to both ask, as well as answer questions that have been submitted throughout the day. Interactive Workshops The conference will offer four workshops that will allow the participants to apply their theoretical knowledge under practical conditions, forming a new set of skills. A description of the workshops and how to register for them can be found under the menu point registration. Borrel: During the borrel beverages will be offered, while the attendees have the opportunity to engage with the speakers, as well as fellow conference attendees. Workshops Design Your Own Social Media Movement The workshop will be focused on how social media and digital tools can become powerful forces in conflict prevention on national and international levels. It will provide examples of successful impacts, which were achieved by social media in various present and past events. Additionally, this workshop will demonstrate how social media can be harnessed to bring positive change in the future. However, another perspective will also be included. For example, the workshop will look into the risks of establishing a movement. Can the risks be tackled? And if so, how? Can a social media movement be countered? And in what ways? All in all, this workshop will offer a comparison between the disadvantages and benefits of designing a social media campaign or strategy. Be the Change You Want to See This workshop will be about sparking real change. This change should be initiated through social media. Even though social media has a wide range of influence, many people do not act based on the information they have. People limit themselves to “liking” or “sharing” posts, passing the responsibility to others, instead of acting themselves. During this workshop, the participants will therefore be asked to be entrepreneurial. Their task is to develop a plan of action to improve a specific conflict situation and ignite change. Discovering Social Media’s True Power In this workshop we will attempt to find out the true power of several different social media movements by analyzing the following aspects: Reach: How many people did this movement reach? How many times was the hash tag used or a post liked/shared? Region: In what part of the world was this movement most active? Why? Creators + Conflict: Who created/invented the movement? For what reason? Goal: What did the creators of the movement hope to achieve with it? Or was the hash tag coined by an individual who did not plan to make a movement out of it in the first place? Effect: What events or developments resulted from this social media movement? Were the creator’s goals achieved? Can we be sure that this was a result of the social media movement and not caused by something else? Silence is violence? In this interactive workshop the group will be divided into two smaller groups out of which one will have the task of embodying a society, which has restricted access to social media. The other group will embody a society, which has unrestricted access to social media. Based on these preconditions, the participants will have the task of creating strategies through which they can forward social issues, as well as messages in a restricted area.
